Tips on Anger Management for Teenagers

Hitting the teenage years is bad enough; your body is going through a lot of changes and there are feelings that you just cannot explain. Anger is one of those and for some it gets out of control. Luckily there are some tips for anger management for teenagers.

Knowing how to express it

The trick to any emotion is knowing how you should express it. This will take some time because it is a volatile emotion and causes a lot of disruption and hurt. Being happy will mean that you express it through smiling and being sad will lead to tears or a frown. Anger is slightly different but there is a way to show without flying off the rails.

The last thing that you want to do is throw things around the room and break something – well, something that is valuable and not yours.

One way that some people deal with the emotion is by throwing a pillow against a wall – this is soft and will not cause any harm to the wall, the pillow or you.

Anger management for teenagers – Dealing with the feelings

Sometimes it is just not possible to show the emotion in any way and you need to get the feeling out of your system. The best option in anger management for teenagers is to learn about self control. This will take some practice and there are chances you are rolling your eyes at this – but it does work.

Start by deep breathing. Anger leads to adrenaline running through your system and by deep breathing, you will be able to relax and lessen the amount of adrenaline that you have. If the deep breathing is difficult, take some time to count to 10 – slowly.

Self control is actually something that you will have been dealing with for years – just without realizing. This is what will stop you from hurting your mom’s feelings when it comes to her bad cooking or from hurting your friend by telling her that her new choice in music is the worst ever. The difference is that the new hormones and emotions running through your body will make it slightly more difficult and you will need to take some time to get it all back again.

Know your feelings

While you are working on your self control, you need to work on knowing more about this feeling. Catch it before it boils so much that it is near impossible to control.

The first step in anger management for teenagers is to know exactly what you are feeling. You think something is not fair; why do you feel that way? Yes, it sounds like a psychologist’s question but it is something that will help you. When you know why you feel a certain way, you will know how to change it.

Start thinking of other ways to handle a situation, before you act on it; just because you can hit someone for the way that they have made you feel does not mean that you should. Run through the list of options and possible outcomes in your head before you react. This will give you the best idea of which is the best one for you. This is known as damage control and is one anger management for teenagers’ tip that will take time to master.
